Opportunity at SIDH - TEACH!!!

Bodhshala Model Primary School Initiative

Education is a process that enables students and teachers to lead a happy and meaningful life. It is about understanding ‘reality ‘at all its levels - the self, the other, the society, nature, and the inter-relationships between all of these. It is about learning skills and developing abilities that will enable one to turn this understanding into a living reality.

The world today, from the metropolises of the United States to the villages of India, is heading towards an unsustainable future defined by consumerism and materialism. The effect is disharmony at all levels mentioned above.

Here at SIDH, our primary mission is to use education as a tool for social change and to encourage a more meaningful exploration and dialogue, not only in the social and political spheres but also within individual mindsets. We envision this process as being critical to re-establishing a sense of harmony.

If you feel that it’s time to stop just criticizing the “system” and time to start creating the world that we imagine, then this opportunity is for you.

We are looking for teachers for our new “Model Primary School”.

Background information:
SIDH, located in the Tehri district of Uttaranchal Pradesh, is an organization working exclusively on the issue of quality education. Its vision is to establish an education process that helps individuals to achieve harmony in the self, ‘swatantrata’, and through that, harmony in society and with Nature, ‘swarajya’.

SIDH plans to start a model primary school from February 2007 on its Bodhigram campus for the local village community of Kempty, about 11 km. from the popular hill town of Mussoorie. Kempty is a fast developing small rural town that has government offices, bank, post office, telephone call centers, schools, hotels, clinics, shops, etc. that primarily serve the surrounding population of about 35 villages. SIDH’s Bodhigram campus, about half a kilometre from Kempty, already has a middle school (class 6 to 8) called Bodhshala where 65 students from 20 surrounding villages are studying.

Over 16 years of rich experience in primary schooling coupled with the need to show-case the practicality of its understanding on quality schooling makes SIDH an ideal organization to run a model primary school of holistic and relevant education.

Model School Vision:
To establish a pioneering center of primary schooling that starts the process of education for children and facilitators towards ‘Right Understanding’ and, accordingly, to ‘Right/Responsible Living’.

What do we intend to do in this new school:
At SIDH, holistic and relevant education is viewed as a process that leads to understanding of reality – which includes the ‘self’, the ‘other’, the ‘society’, and Nature and their inter-relationships. This understanding then becomes the basis of responsible living, which ultimately leads to a happy and meaningful life. At the “Model School”, we intend to create spaces that will facilitate this process for students and teachers.

How do we intend to do this?

This is where the new incoming teachers fit into the picture. We already have some ideas from our previous learnings and experiences. They include:

o Creating spaces for dialogue and self-reflection because this will help a child develop his/her own understanding and realize his/her self-worth
- To both stimulating the child’s 5 senses, and drawing the child’s attention to feelings, thoughts, and desires
- To encourage the natural curiosity of the child, instead of dampening it.
- Enabling children to become critical thinkers by teaching them how to think and not what to think

o Emphasis on ‘learning by doing’ so that children acquire skills necessary to become self-dependent and develop their abilities for self-expression.
- Productive work such as gardening, card-making, cooking, and sewing.
- Activities such as singing, theatre, dance, arts & crafts, films, games, music, and sports.

o Learning from reality, instead of only from text-books
- Thematic project work that is based on the ‘live’ and ‘local’ environment.
- Integration of subjects whenever possible.

o Shifting from reward & punishment based discipline to developing the child’s self-discipline through an ‘understanding’ and dialogic approach.
- Using student and teacher self-reflection and group reflection to facilitate the shift
- To discuss group and individual behavior through the use of classroom meetings and individual conferences

The Model School will be a bi-lingual school instructing in and learning both Hindi and English. We will begin with pre-primary, class one, and two. We will add the following classes (third, fourth, etc) in subsequent years and plan on upgrading it to a middle school and then high school.

In addition, since SIDH sees its role as a training and advocacy institute as well, the expectation for the Model School teaching staff is to develop into teacher-trainers so that they can share their experiences and spread their practice by conducting trainings for other educators.

InSPIRE

Myself and some others are planning a summer program for young NRI's (ages 18-24). The following is the "Concept Document". There are definitely many opportunities to get involved (could be paid), including:
- Website design
- Helping to put together a reader
- Selecting relative films
- Finances/Accounts
- Coordinator for the entire 6-week program - 1 batch or both batches (be with the group for the entire time)
- Logistical planning in India - travel, lodging, food, first-aid, emergency planning, cost estimation, etc.
- Planning specific exposures/interactions/experiences in India

InSPIRE
India Summer Program Inspiring Reflective Exploration
InSPIRE is a 6-week long immersion program that reconnects young Indians from abroad to India. The goal is for the participants to re-evaluate their aspirations as they explore and challenge their assumptions about themselves and their relationship with the world around them.
Looking deeper at India. Looking deeper at your Self.
And the interrelatedness of the world.

The program will be launched at the end of May 2007. In the first year, there will be two different batches with 20 to 30 participants in each batch. The prospective dates are: 26th May to 8th July, and 7th August to 19th September. The participants will be between the ages of 18 and 24.

Background
Over the past years, there seems to be a growing trend for Indian youth abroad to want to come back to India for various reasons. Some want to give back to their ‘motherland’. Others want to understand what it means to be “Indian”. There are those that want to explore spirituality, and those that want to tour the land and travel. Whatever the reason, many young Indians abroad seem to have the desire to come to India.

In the United States and countries of the “West”, NRIs’ understanding of India usually comes from what’s in the news and from the perspectives of their families. Many other perspectives that are closer to the ground reality are often missed.

In the “West” and in Indian city life today we are often unaware of what goes into producing the goods and services that we consume, and shielded from the consequences of our actions. All we know is what happens at the point of consumption, not aware of the before or after.

College students are at the period of life when they are deciding what their next step will be – career, post-graduation, social work, etc. Many times they feel that their options are limited.

Vision/Purpose
We’d like to create a space and open up avenues to help figure out what to do with our lives and why. This experience would enable us to explore what it means to be Indian by seeing India through a different lens and engaging in mutual learning and sharing process with various communities/NGOs in India. Through these experiences, we hope that participants will be able to recognize and re-discover one’s relationship with India. As we explore and understand our aspirations and our interrelatedness we anticipate a sense of personal responsibility being developed that eventually leads to a global consciousness. This program also aims at building a fluid network of young Indians to continually share ideas, visions and thoughts leading to inspiration, exploration of aspirations and Self-understanding, which will lead towards positive collective action.

Exploration -> Understanding -> Integrity and Personal Responsibility -> Global Consciousness and Productive, Collective Action

Itinerary
We are going to attempt to realize our vision through a process of self-exploration. This exploration will be instigated by exposures, sessions, examination of various issues in India from multiple perspectives, readings, films, dialogues and activities that develop personal responsibility. At each “site”, we will also figure out ways to add something of value back to the organization, cause, and/or community.

President's mention about Jeevan Vidya in his address to the nation on the eve of Independence day 2006

Full Address : http://presidentofindia.nic.in/scripts/independencedetail.jsp?id=7

Extract:

(b) Social development in difficult areas: Social-minded people may be enabled to start educational, sports complexes and healthcare institutions in every difficult area in the country. I would like to share the salient features of a typical model that has made a significant impact on social development.
Jeevan Vidya experience: Jeevan Vidya is being practiced by Prof Ganesh Bagaria, IIT, Kanpur, Prof Rajeev Sangal, Director IIIT (Hyderabad) and their teams. This scheme is concerned about addressing the basic causes of major problems of violence, corruption, exploitation, domination, terrorism and war. It has been found that violent and anti-social behaviour, unless dealt with care and with professionalism, could aggravate the extreme behaviour.

Jeevan Vidya develops tolerance for ambiguity and uncertainty in human conduct by enabling self-knowledge that understands harmony in the self and in the entire existence. The academicians could bring about marked change even among the inmates of jails through the use of these techniques.

Jeevan Vidya is a 'teachable human value based skill' that can address inherent conflicts within the mind of the individual, within families, in organizations and in public life. Inner conflict is the very essence of violence. For example, with the skills imparted, it would be possible to reduce the overall period of secondary education from 25,000 hours of teaching to 20,000 hours, since the children become more responsible and productivity conscious. These experiments can be outreached to influence many people by developing networks using ICT through our educational system, that needs to pay increasing attention to this aspect of human development.

This process of imparting self-knowledge would promote a learning atmosphere, where this whole movement of inquiry into knowledge, into oneself, into the possibility of something beyond knowledge would bring about naturally a psychological revolution. From this comes inevitably a totally different order in human relationship and therefore society as a whole. The intelligent understanding of this process itself can bring about a profound change in the consciousness of mankind.

Whisper behind the window

A chain of comments..which I thought could be shared on a slightly larger platform..

Amitabh said...

things wont change unless you want them to ..and then again change for changes sake ..is well, a fart we have all smelt...There has to be an ultimate aim ..an awareness...what do you want to change and how do you want to change it. Do you want to revolt..well try it...revolutions only make good stories.
My point is this... Reacting to things and circumstances wont get you anywhere. We have to act.NOt react.

P.SThinking is a natrual process everybody does it. Its what you think that makes the difference. What are you thinking ??

i dont think i am prepared for a revolution...i might dream about it but in the end its cold reality which plays the spoilsport...i think right now its all about what i want to do further in life...i hv chosen to become an engineer because i thought that i liked it...still do...at least i hope so...so far so good..its what i want to do after it...just go with the flow and become a clog in some company working ur ass off(cant help that either)...or do something more meaningful(read risky)....but its the rick which frightens me the most..what if i later realize the catch wasnt worth the bait??

I like the idea -- we're looking for "evolution, not revolution". The difference to me is that in "revolution" the change is sudden, and may end up being for good or bad. "Evolution" is a change, but it's a slower, more natural process... and in its meaning, you are moving forward, progressing.

I, myself, have started becoming more aware of the subtler things in my life - I was at a "hi-fi" event, and we were eating food, chatting, etc. But, i felt discomfort... there were all these people around me that were working, cooking the food, serving the food, putting back the chairs, etc... doing physical work. And here I was standing, and chatting. And, most of us that were standing and chatting would think that our "mental activity" was more important than the worker's "physical activity". And, I thought.. I'm just a consumer, I don't produce anything.
At that moment, I looked for a friend to go help out with the work. I asked one person, he refused. Then, I asked Sameer.. and he came along with me. Basically, there was only one thing left to clean up... pick up and put in the van. So, I helped out.

However, the process started. I felt uncomfortable, and I was aware of this discomfort. That was step 1. Step 2 was being able to act on this discomfort (which I partly was able to do). Step 3, I think is being able to act right away and naturally whenever there is discomfort. Step 4 is creating situations and spaces, and planning for the future, where we rid ourselves of these discomforts, and live according to Understanding.

I've definitely oversimplified it. These steps don't always go in chronological order and can also be simaltaneous. Also, with different aspects of Reality/Truth, we may be at different stages. Already in our lives, we live according to many aspects of Truth. Also, there are many aspects which we have no awareness of.

Continual sharing, continual exploration, continual awareness, continual efforts to put 'understanding' into action... for me, this is my path.

Amitabh said...

I agree with raj. Till late the feeling of discomfort would be apparent. Lets call it awareness. But awareness alone wont lead to anothing , its the application of that awareness in the terms of work and baehaviour that is important .And once I began applying myself to erase my discomfort, then the actual process began ...
Siddhartha feeling that cold life spoils the party is because of a lack of implementation. Try once ..in the smallest of things ..the pettiest of habits. Try to think it through and change it as an excercise...I think we realise how much control we have over our life..
And once that realisation seeps in , the process begins I think.
to put it into a nutshell ..I feel that this is philosiphy/school of thought etc..that works from micro to macro. From personal to social and then so on ..so to bring about a change in the larger order..we need to first understand and change our selves.

The 'Thinking Disease'

“Cause you can’t jump the track, we’re like cars on a cable
And life’s like an hourglass glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button now
Sing if you understand”

-Ana Nalick (Breathe)

It is really a Herculean task to pen down all the thoughts and questions raging through my mind right now. But it would be foolish to feign ignorance and let them create a pandemonium. So I will do what is best in such a situation – just go with the flow and write down whatever comes to my mind.

Due to my philosophical rejuvenation at SIDH, if I might call it so, a lot of preconditions have been shaken through and through. What is the biggest surprise is that I did not mean any of this to happen. I had always thought that I was comfortable with my conditioning and that would be the way things would probably be. But the seed planted has not only germinated but begun to grow. I really am questioning things that I thought I wanted to do.

So then, what is it that will help me attain contentment? What if I chuck away all my plans and set out in search for that eluding phantom, like the shepherd of ‘The Alchemist’? What if I find out that the things that I pursued with such determination were not really what I wanted? Would I be able to go back in time and at least be able the plans which would give me that ‘apparent happiness’?

These are just some of the questions that have been boggling me. Unless I am able to answer them, I’ll be like that man who tries to ride two boats at the same time and finally ends up in the water.

I have always been a tad bit strange. Imagining the world as an ideal place and being frighteningly conceited; all at the same time. I have been a chronic victim of the “Thinking Disease”. Hmmm…..I really do think too much. Maybe it’s because I don’t do anything. An empty mind is, after all, some kind of a workshop. The Devil may not own it all the time but someone has to, all the same.

So there’s the sum of things. I don’t expect things will change a lot. Not unless a bolt from the blue lights up that bulb somewhere inside. And till then, I will be ‘thinking’ a lot – looking for answers and finding newer problems in their stead.

To The Hour Bygone

They poured in through the gash in the wall;
The crimson rays of the dying sun.
And bathed my world in a strange hue,
Like drugs infiltrating my veins.

The air breezed about in strange fashion,
As if talking to the gusty trees.
The stars had just started to twinkle.
As if knowingly winking at me.

I lay sprawled on the floor;
Ogling at the strange reflections on the walls.
They clouded my being and my senses,
Like moon being hidden by rag like clouds.

I think about the future,
I think about the past.
That moment then was beautiful.
But in my naiveté I let it pass.

My present leaves me now wearied out.
I wander alone in this maze of questions.
And my troubled mind seeks its refuge;
Like a defeated soldier retreating home.

I turn to those soft hours now.
They shine on like smouldering cinders.
They shine on but never seem to flame out.
Like those shimmering stars who once winked.

That hour often glimmers afresh,
Lighting my shadowy path in ways unknown.
What is this miracle I wonder aloud!
I take a walk back into that world once known.
